IS CALLED / NAME
མིང་ལ་ + Name + ཟེར་གྱི་ཡོད།
Question : མིང་ལ་ + ག་རེ་ + ཟེར་གྱི་ཡོད།
  • Name + ཟེར་གྱི་ཡོད། means “is called” : the name is introduced by ལ་ (“as”) and the verb ཟེར་ takes the usual གྱི་ཡོད། ending. ངའི་མིང་ལ་བློ་བཟང་ཟེར་གྱི་ཡོད། “My name is Lobsang”. The ངའི་ is often dropped when you talk about yourself.
  • To ask for a name, put ག་རེ་ in the place of the name. When the question is about someone else or about a thing, the ending is usually ཡོད་རེད། : ཁོང་གི་མིང་ལ་ག་རེ་ཟེར་གྱི་ཡོད་རེད། “What is his name?”
  • To ask someone politely for their name, use མཚན་ and ཞུ་ : ཁྱེད་རང་གི་མཚན་ལ་ག་རེ་ཞུ་གི་ཡོད། “What are you called?” (H). The verb ལབ་ is also heard for “to call” : ངའི་སྐྱེས་སྨན་གྱི་མིང་ལ་སྒྲོལ་མ་ལབ་ཀྱི་རེད། “My wife's name is Dolma.”
