WHERE THINGS ARE

IN, ON, UNDER, OUTSIDE
Place + གི་ / ཀྱི་ / གྱི་ / འི་ + ནང་ / སྒང་ / འོག་ + ལ་
Inside : ནང་ལ་ Outside : ཕྱི་ལོགས་ལ་ On : སྒང་ལ་ Under : འོག་ལ་
  • The place comes first, then a connecting particle, then the position word, then ལ་ : དེབ་ཅོག་ཙེའི་སྒང་ལ་ “on the table”. The connecting particle depends on the last letter of the place word: གི་ after ག or ང (ཁང་གི་), ཀྱི་ after ད, བ or ས (བོད་ཀྱི་), གྱི་ after ན, ར, ལ or མ (སྒམ་གྱི་), and འི་ after a vowel (ཅོག་ཙེའི་, ངའི་, ཁང་པའི་).
  • ལ་ at the end belongs to the whole phrase and marks where something is or where it goes; it is not translated. In everyday speech the connecting particle is often dropped (ལྷ་ཁང་ནང་ལ་ “inside the temple”, རྐུབ་ཀྱག་སྒང་ལ་ “on the chair”), but the position word and ལ་ stay.
  • ནང་ལ་ also means “at home” when nothing precedes it. ནང་ལོགས་ལ་ and ཕྱི་ལོགས་ལ་ are used on their own, without a place, for “inside” and “outside”. For “on”, སྒང་ལ་ is the usual word; སྟེང་ལ་ is a rarer alternative, found with “put” (བྱེ་མ་ཀ་ར་ལྕོག་ཙེའི་སྟེང་ལ་བཞག། “Put the sugar on the table.”).
