WITH (SOMEONE) / TOGETHER

Person + དང་ མཉམ་དུ་ + Verb
Together (no person) : མཉམ་དུ་ + Verb Not : Verb + མ་ / མི་
  • With a person : Person + (དང་) + མཉམ་དུ་ + Verb means “to do something with someone”. The དང་ is often dropped in speech : ང་སྤུན་སྐྱ་མཉམ་དུ་ཡོང་པ་ཡིན། “I came with my relative”. In questions the person can also take the connective འི་ : སུའི་མཉམ་དུ་ “with whom?”.
  • Without a person, མཉམ་དུ་ alone means “together” (or “along”) : the people doing the action are already in the sentence (ང་ཚོ་, ང་གཉིས་…) or are clear from the context.
  • You may also meet མཉམ་པོ་, a spelling variant (ཚེ་རིང་དང་མཉམ་པོ་སྐད་ཆ་བཤད་མཁན་… “the person who's talking to Tshering”), and the honorific ལྷན་དུ་ (ཁྱེད་རང་ག་དུས་ཐེག་ནའང་ང་ལྷན་དུ་བཅར་གྱི་ཡིན། “Whenever you go, I will come along with you”).
