TURNING A NOUN INTO A VERB

Noun + བྱེད་ / གནང་ / གཏོང་ / བཟོ་ / རྒྱག་ / ཞུ་ + Auxiliary
Negation or adverb in between : Noun + མ་ / མང་པོ་ + Verbalizer
  • A verbalizer is a light verb that follows a noun to make one compound verb: ལས་ཀ་བྱེད་ “to work”, ཁ་པར་གཏོང་ “to phone”, ཁ་ལག་བཟོ་ “to cook”, སྐོར་ར་རྒྱག་ “to go around”. Each noun takes its own verbalizer and you cannot predict it, so learn the pair as one verb; the English rarely translates the verbalizer (“do”, “send”, “make” no longer apply). A few nouns take two, with two meanings: སྐད་རྒྱག་ “to shout”, སྐད་གཏོང་ “to call someone over”.
  • The verbalizer carries the tense and the auxiliary, the noun never changes: བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད། / བྱས་པ་ཡིན། (བྱེད་), གཏོང་ / བཏང་ and རྒྱག་ / བརྒྱབ་ (the past form is often used in every tense), བཟོ་ / བཟོས་, ཞུ་ / ཞུས་. Negation and words like མང་པོ་ slip between the noun and the verbalizer: ཁ་པར་མ་གཏོང་, སེམས་ཁྲལ་མང་པོ་བྱེད་.
  • The honorific of བྱེད་ is གནང་ (and སྐྱོན་ for རྒྱག་); ཞུ་ is the polite verbalizer for courtesies such as leave, apologies and questions. These verbalizers make deliberate actions; ཤོར་ makes the ones that just happen, as in སྐད་ཤོར་ “to cry out”.
