THE WAY OF DOING… / HOW TO DO…

Verb + སྟངས་ / ཚུལ་ / སྲོལ་
With know : Verb + སྟངས་ + ཤེས་ · After ཡིན / མེད : ཡིན་ / མེད་ + ཚུལ་
  • Verb + སྟངས་ turns an action into “the way it is done”, so that the way itself can be described (“his way of talking is odd”), known or learned (“know how to cook”). The verb is in its plain present form, and the person is usually marked with གི་ (ཁོང་གི་སྐད་ཆ་བཤད་སྟངས་), although གི་ is often left out in speech. Verb + སྟངས་ + ཤེས་ is a little more pointed than Verb + ཤེས་ alone : it asks about the know-how, not just the ability.
  • ཚུལ་ means the same as སྟངས་ and is felt as slightly more formal, so it is common when talking about the Dharma, while སྟངས་ is the everyday word. Only ཚུལ་ can also follow ཡིན་ / མེད་ (སེམས་བསྐྱེད་གལ་ཆེན་པོ་ཡིན་ཚུལ་ “how important bodhicitta is”). ཚུལ་ has two other uses that are not “the way of doing” : after ཡོད་ / མེད་ / ཡིན་ + ལབ་ it means “they say that…” (དགོན་པ་འདིར་གྲྭ་པ་སུམ་བརྒྱ་ཡོད་ཚུལ་ལབ་ཀྱི་ཡོད་རེད། “they say there are three hundred monks in this monastery”), and ཚུལ་བྱེད་ means “pretend” (ཁོང་བྲེལ་བ་ཚ་པོ་ཡོད་ཚུལ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་འདུག “she pretends to be busy”).
  • སྲོལ་ is the customary or traditional way a group of people does something, so it is not used for one person's own manner. It is a short form of Verb + ཡག་གི་ལུགས་སྲོལ་ (ཆང་ས་རྒྱག་སྲོལ་ “the way of getting married”). Fixed words built the same way : གནས་སྟངས་ “situation”, བསམ་ཚུལ་ “opinion”, ལུགས་སྲོལ་ “custom”.
