HOW … IT IS! (EXCLAMATIONS)
Thing + གང་འདྲས་ + Adjective + འདུག / བྱུང་ / ཀྱི་རེད།
Question, not an exclamation : Noun + གང་འདྲས་ + འདུག · Degree of an adjective : Adjective root + ལོད་ + འདུག
  • གང་འདྲས་ « how … ! » stands right before the adjective, after the thing described, and turns the sentence into an exclamation : no verb or question is needed, just a phrase. It is གང་ « what » + འདྲ་ « like » (འདྲ་བ་ « to be alike »), so literally « like what ». The ending follows the time : འདུག for now, བྱུང་། for past, ཀྱི་རེད། for future. The final ས་ is how it is said ; the ང་ often sounds like ན་.
  • The same exclamation can also be made with the comparative form of the adjective and ལ་ (སློབ་ཚན་འདི་ལས་སླ་བ་ལ། « how easy this lesson is ! »).
  • Do not mix it up with the question. When གང་འདྲས་ comes after a noun and ends the sentence with a non-verb, it asks « how is it ? » (last section below). It cannot ask the degree of an adjective : for « how difficult is it ? » use the root of the adjective + ལོད་ (དཀའ་ལས་ཁག་ལོད་འདུག). Before a verb, the question is གང་འདྲས་ཟེ་ « how (do you do it) ? ».

འཐེན་ཐུག་འདི་གང་འདྲས་ཞིམ་པོ་འདུག How tasty this noodle soup is!
ཆར་པ་གང་འདྲས་ཤུགས་ཆེན་པོ་རྒྱག་གི་འདུག How hard it is raining!
Past and future
ཁྱེད་རང་གིས་བརྩམས་པའི་སྙན་ངག་གང་འདྲས་སྙན་པོ་བྱུང་། Wow! How great the poem you wrote was!
རོགས་པ་ཚོ་ཚང་མ་ངའི་སྐྱེས་སྐར་ལ་ཡོང་ན་གང་འདྲས་སྐྱིད་པོ་ཡོང་གི་རེད། How much fun it will be if all [my] friends come to my birthday party!
ཁྱེད་རང་གིས་རྔན་པ་གང་འདྲས་མང་པོ་འཁྱེར་སླེབས་སོང་། Look how many gifts you brought!
Not an exclamation : གང་འདྲས་ as « how is it ? »
རྒྱ་གར་ཀི་ཁྲིམས་དང་ལུགས་སྲོལ་གང་འདྲས་འདུག། What are the law and customs of India like?
དེང་སང་ཚོང་གང་འདྲས་འདུག How is business these days?
