ONLY…

ONLY X / NOTHING EXCEPT X
X + མ་གཏོགས་ + Verb + མ་ / མི་ / མེད་
Without the negation : “except X”
  • Literally the sentence says “except X, there is nothing”, so the verb after མ་གཏོགས་ is negative and the whole thing means “only X”.
  • X is usually a number or an amount, often with ཉུང་ཉུང་ “a little” or ཁ་ཤས་ “a few”, and comes right before མ་གཏོགས་.
  • With a positive verb, མ་གཏོགས་ just means “except for / apart from”. Not to be confused with ན་མ་གཏོགས་ “unless” : see the card “UNLESS YOU DO…”.
  • མ་གཏོགས་ is sometimes written ལ་མ་གཏོགས་ : ཁོང་སྐབས་སྐབས་ལ་མ་གཏོགས་རླུང་ལངས་ཀྱི་མི་འདུག “He only loses his temper at times.”
  • Two other ways to say “only” : X + ལས་ + negative verb (ང་ལ་ཕྲུ་གུ་གཉིས་ལས་མེད། “I have only two children.”), and X + གཅིག་པུ་ + positive verb : see the card “ONLY X, WITHOUT A NEGATION”.
