MAYBE / PROBABLY / IT SEEMS

IT MUST BE… / PROBABLY…
Verb / thing + ཡོད་ / ཡིན་ + ས་རེད།
Short : Verb + ས་རེད། · Not : ཡོད་ + ས་མ་རེད།
  • ས་རེད། is the strong « must / most likely » : you say it because you can see or know something concrete that points to it, often given in the next sentence (« because… »). It is firmer than ཀྱི་རེད། and འགྲོའོ། (simple guesses) and about as firm as པ་འདྲ།.
  • It goes after the ordinary auxiliary of the speaker's own view, even when the subject is someone else : ཡིན་ / ཡོད་ for « is / has », and after a verb ཡོད་ (already done), ཀྱི་ཡོད་ (now) or ཡག་ཡིན་ (later). Negative : ས་མ་རེད།.
  • Short form : stick ས་རེད། straight onto the verb (བརྗེད་ས་རེད། « will most likely forget »). It then points to the future, and it is the usual way to talk about yourself with verbs you do not control (forgetting, getting sad). The adverbs ཧ་ལམ་ and ཕལ་ཆེར་ « most likely » can open the sentence for extra emphasis.
