IF…

IF IT IS… / IF IT ISN'T…
Condition + ཡིན་ / མིན་ + ན་ + result
Future : Verb + ཡག་ཡིན་ / ཡག་མིན་ + ན་
  • The condition comes first and ན་ sits in the middle of the sentence, where English puts “if” at the start. གལ་སྲིད་ at the very beginning adds emphasis but is optional and often dropped.
  • “To be” takes the བདག form before ན་ : ཡིན་ན་ / མིན་ན་, never རེད་ན་. A condition is a hypothetical, so it is the speaker's own view.
  • For “if … is going to”, ཡག་ཡིན་ན་ is more common than ཀྱི་ཡིན་ན་ : it is a little less sure, so it fits a possibility rather than a fact.
