ANY- / EVERY- / WHATEVER

ANYWHERE / ANYTHING / NOBODY…
Question word + ཡང་ / ཀྱང་ + Verb
Not / nobody / nothing : … + ཡང་ / ཀྱང་ + Verb + མ་ / མི་
  • A question word followed directly by ཡང་ (no ན) means “any- / every-”: ག་པར་ཡང་ anywhere, ག་རེ་ཡང་ / གང་ཡང་ anything, སུ་ཡང་ anybody. With a negative verb it becomes “nowhere / nothing / nobody” (or “not … anywhere / anything / anybody”). With a positive verb it means “any … is possible” or, with ཡོད / འདུག, “everywhere / everything”.
  • Spelling : ཀྱང་ comes after a word ending in ག ད བ ས (སུས་ཀྱང་, ག་ནས་ཀྱང་), ཡང་ everywhere else (སུ་ཡང་, ག་པར་ཡང་, གང་ཡང་). In speech, ཡང་ is often used even where the spelling would need ཀྱང་.
  • Do not confuse with the wherever / whatever / whoever pattern : there the verb comes before ན་ཡང་ (ག་པར་འགྲོ་ན་ཡང་ = wherever you go), here ཡང་ comes right after the question word and the verb follows.
