ASKING SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING

PLEASE… (POLITE REQUEST)
(མ་)Verb + རོགས་གནང་།
Give : གནང་ + རོགས་གནང་། · Don't : མ་ + Verb + རོགས་གནང་།
  • Verb + རོགས་གནང་། turns a verb into a polite request. It replaces the plain command with anyone you address with respect, and covers “please…”, “could you…” and “would you mind…”. Use the honorific form of the verb when there is one (ཕེབས་, གསུང་, བཞེས་, བཞུགས་), but ordinary verbs such as བྱེད་ or གཞག་ work too.
  • For the negative, མ་ goes right before the verb. To ask someone to give something, the verb གནང་ comes first, so གནང་ appears twice : གནང་རོགས་གནང་།
  • A shorter form drops གནང་ : ཁོང་ལ་ཁ་པར་མ་གཏོང་རོགས། “Please don't call him!” To ask permission (“May I…?”), use ན་འགྲིག་གི་རེད་པས། instead.
