CAN / KNOW HOW TO / ALLOWED TO

I CAN… / I'M ABLE TO…
  • ཐུབ་པ། describes a real ability: physical, technical, mental or emotional. The action verb stays in its basic form before ཐུབ་.
  • ཐུབ་པ། is non-volitional, so it takes the same auxiliaries as other non-volitional verbs: ཀྱི་ཡོད། / ཀྱི་འདུག / ཀྱི་རེད། in the present and future, བྱུང་། / སོང་། in the past.
  • Do not overuse it for asking permission. “May I open the door?” is said with ན་ འགྲིག་གི་རེད་པས། (conditional), not with ཐུབ་.
