MAKE SURE TO…

Verb + པར་བྱེད་ / བར་བྱེད་ + ཨ། / ཀྱི་ཡིན། / དགོས་རེད།
Negative : མ་ + Verb + པར་བྱེད་ · After the verb itself : བྱེད་ conjugates (བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡིན། / བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད་རེད། / བྱེད་དགོས་རེད།)
  • Verb + པར་བྱེད་ means “to make sure that…”, “to see to it that…”, “to try to…”. It is used mostly with verbs of things that happen to us rather than things we decide (to forget, to lose, to know, to remember, to find, to hear), and it gives the speaker some control over them.
  • The spelling is པར་ after most final letters (ཤེས་པར་, དྲན་པར་, རྙེད་པར་) and བར་ after a syllable with no final letter or ending in ང, ར, ལ (ཧ་གོ་བར་, མཐོང་བར་, ཚར་བར་). The verb is in its present form, and a negation goes before it (མ་བརྗེད་པར་བྱེད་ཨ། “make sure you don't forget”).
  • བྱེད་ takes the endings of a volitional verb : ཨ། for a reminder or a command, ཀྱི་ཡིན། for a promise (“I'll make sure”), ཀྱི་ཡོད་རེད། for an ongoing effort, དགོས་རེད། for a necessity. The one who makes sure and the one the verb is about can be different people (མ་གོ་པར་བྱེད་དགོས། “one must make sure that they don't hear”).
