AFTER DOING…

AFTER DOING…
Verb + (ཚར་) + པའི་/བའི་ རྗེས་ལ་ + next action
  • The verb before པའི་/བའི་ རྗེས་ལ་ is in the past (nominalised) form; the second half of the sentence can be in any tense and mode. The verb takes པའི་ or བའི་ according to its spelling (བཟས་པའི་, ཟ་ཚར་བའི་).
  • ཚར་ ("to finish") is very often added before པའི་/བའི་ རྗེས་ལ་ and is usually not translated; it is the same structure and only makes the sentence sound smoother and more native.
  • རྗེས་ལ་ is almost interchangeable with གཞུག་ལ་ (e.g. ཁ་ལག་བཟས་པའི་གཞུག་ལ་ = after eating); both also work after a noun (e.g. དགོང་དག་ཞལ་ལག་གི་རྗེས་ལ་ = after dinner).
  • With a negative verb (མ་ + verb) it is possible but sounds less natural : other structures are usually preferred.
