ABOUT TO / JUST / ALMOST

I'M ABOUT TO…
Verb + འགྲོའོ་ + ཡོད། / ཡོད་རེད། / འདུག
Question : Verb + འགྲོའོ་ + ཡོད་པས། · Negative : Verb + འགྲོའོ་ + མེད། / མི་འདུག
  • Verb + འགྲོའོ་ + ཡོད། / འདུག says that something is on the point of happening : “is about to”, “is almost”. The verb stays in its plain present form, and the ending follows the usual rules (ཡོད། with “I”, ཡོད་རེད། or འདུག with other people, ཡོད་པས། to ask “you”).
  • It is used for a near future (“the exam is about to take place”) and for a thing nearly finished (“it is almost 9 o'clock”). The negative is correct but rarer, mostly in an answer to a precise question. After འགྲོའོ་, ཡིན། / རེད། would mean the opposite (“has just done”, see the card “I'VE JUST…”) and བྱས། gives “almost did” in the past (see “I ALMOST…”).
  • Careful not to confuse it with the འགྲོའོ། of probability (“maybe”), which has no auxiliary after it. Colloquially, འགྲོ་འགྲོའོ་ཡོད། can also mean “to be ready to go” (ང་བོད་ལ་འགྲོ་འགྲོའོ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད། “I'm getting ready to go to Tibet”).
