TIME : IT TAKES, IT'S TIME, I HAVE TIME

IT TAKES (TIME)…
Duration + འགོར་གྱི་རེད།
Question : ག་ཚོད་ + འགོར་གྱི་རེད། / No more than : Duration + ལས་ + འགོར་གྱི་མ་རེད།
  • འགོར་བ། means “to take (time), to last”. Put the length of time before it: ཆུ་ཚོད་གསུམ་ཙམ་འགོར་གྱི་རེད། “it takes about three hours”. To ask how long, put ག་ཚོད་ (“how many”) after the unit of time: ཆུ་ཚོད་ག་ཚོད་འགོར་གྱི་རེད། “how many hours does it take?” The question word is sometimes written ག་ཚད་.
  • To say “no more than”, put ལས་ after the duration and make the end negative : འགོར་གྱི་མ་རེད། or འགོར་གྱི་ཡོད་མ་རེད། (also འགོར་བ་མེད།). An amount ending in ལྷག་ (“and a bit”) can do without ལས་. མ་གཏོགས་ works the same way : འདི་ཉིན་མཚན་གཉིས་མ་གཏོགས་འགོར་གྱི་མ་རེད། “this one takes only two days and two nights”.
  • For the past, use འགོར་སོང་། “it took (long)”. To guess, use འགོར་ས་རེད། “it will probably take”. The habitual “it usually takes” can be written གྱི་ཡོག་རེད།.
