WHEN / WHILE / BEFORE / UNTIL

WHEN / WHILE DOING…
Verb + དུས་ + main clause
With ཡིན / ཡོད / མེད : Noun or adjective + ཡིན་ / ཡོད་ (or མེད་) + དུས་
  • དུས་ comes straight after the verb in its present form (འབབ་དུས་, ཟ་དུས་), with no particle between them and no ལ་ after it. The second half of the sentence can be in any tense: the verb before དུས་ stays in the present even when the sentence is about the past (ཡོང་དུས་, འགྲོ་དུས་ below), and it can even be a habit (“when I was young, I loved playing”).
  • དུས་ also follows ཡིན་, ཡོད་ and མེད་ (ཆུང་ཆུང་ཡིན་དུས་ “when I was young”, ལས་ཀ་མེད་དུས་ “when I have no work”). A plain negated verb before དུས་ is rare: with “have”, use མེད་དུས་.
  • The two actions overlap: for two actions in order (“after eating, …”) see AFTER DOING…. The formal སྐབས་ and the stronger “throughout” རིང་ལ་ do the same job (see AT THE TIME OF DOING…). Do not confuse with དུས་ as a plain noun (དུས་ཚོད་ “time”, ནམ་དུས་ “season”) or ག་དུས་ “when?”.
